PHP Upgrade Notice

Hello,

We will be upgrading php on all of servers from PHP5.2 to PHP5.3. This upgrade will resolve many security exploits and make services more stable. Ideally we would have preferred to continue support for PHP5.2 for an extended time, but unfortunately PHP5.2 has been made “End of Life” by the PHP Group and is no longer receiving any security updates. Some providers may still continue running PHP 5.2 but we feel this isn’t a safe path to take and could potentially end up putting our clients at a greater risk. Our view on this is that a scheduled upgrade to PHP5.3 with enough notice and then doing the upgrade in a controlled way is the best course of action and in addition we had many users actually requesting PHP 5.3. over the last 2 years.

The upgrade is scheduled to be completed within the next 2 weeks. All popular PHP software such as WordPress, fully support PHP5.3 and you are unlikely to have any problems or notice anything. However if you are running any outdated PHP scripts or custom PHP scripts that does not support PHP5.3 we recommend to upgrade them to the latest version to make to make compatible with PHP5.3.

If you have any questions or concerns about this upgrade, please do not hesitate to contact us.

I hope you will enjoy the new features and increased security!

Best Regards,

Server Hippo – Network Problem

On 11/25/2010 some users experienced degraded network connectivity stemming from a network attack that took place around the time. The incident was roughly 70 minutes in duration lasting from 6:55pm to 8:05pm CST before it was fully mitigated by our network engineers.

This attack was related to a similar attack that we observed several weeks ago and unfortunately both attacks ceased before the effects they were causing at certain points in the network could be fully analyzed. However, we have gathered sufficient data during this incident to determine the area of the network being exploited and have put additional monitors in place to assist in gathering relevant data that can be used to more quickly mitigate such an attack if it occurs again.
